Biographical Notes

Harry Stuart Norton Robinson, known as Harry, was born on 15 February 1879 at Edinburgh, Scotland, the son of John Henry and Elizabeth Annie (née Wright) Robinson. Harry was at home with his family in 1881 and 1891 at Edinburgh. Harry, his parents, and younger brother and younger sister migrated to New Zealand in 1894. In 1905 Harry was in Wellington, a jeweller like his father. He married Alice Mary McAdam Bethune in 1904. Their two oldest children – sons Ian and Douglas – transferred to Waimataitai Schol in 1913 and remained there for two years. By 1911 his occupation was captain, Defence Staff. He had served in the South African War. In the early years of World War I, Captain N. S. N. Robinson, New Zealand Staff Corps, was stationed in Timaru, where he was responsible for the embarkation of many recruits. Captain H. S. Robinson, of Timaru, has received notice of his promotion to Nelson to command the sub-district. He will bo very much missed by his many friends, his courteous manner and readiness to assist anyone officially or otherwise hare been much appreciated by all with whom he came in contact, says the Timaru "Herald.*' [Star, 8 Feb 1915.] He, himself, went to Trentham and joined the Expeditionary Force. The “Timaru Herald” of 16 May 1916 reported – “Captain H. S. Robinson, formerly of Timaru, but now serving with the Forces in Egypt, has been promoted to the rank of Major.” In January 1919 the Timaru Herald noted that Capatin (Temporary-Major) H. S. N. Robin, N.Z.S.C., formerly of Timaru, who recently returned from the front, takes command of the Nelson Area Group from January 18th.”

Douglas Lister Robinson, the younger son of Harry and Alice, died in 1941 on service in Crete.
