Biographical Notes

Robert Alexander Dewar, known as Bert, was born on 15 November 1892 (not 1889 as recorded in his military record) at Roxburgh, Otago, the younger son of John and Bethia (née Bringans) Dewar, of Alexandra. He was educated at Lowburn School near Cromwell in Central Otago, and at the Alexandra Public School, going out to work at the age of fourteen. Bert was a baker at Fairlie when he enlisted, leaving by the train from Fairlie on 12 August 1914 with the 2nd South Canterbury Infantry Regiment men from Fairlie. He married Mary (Maimie) Hawthorne on 29 March 1921 at the Hampden Presbyterial Church. Robert Alexander Dewar died unexpectedly on 22 August 1924 at Dunedin, after a serious operation. He left a young widow and little son.
