Biographical Notes

Lawrence William Athy Webster was born on 21 October 1892 at Timaru, the son of John Thomas and Louisa Evangeline (née Butterworth) Webster. He was educated at Timaru Main School. L. W. A. Webster enlisted with the Australian Imperial Force on 27 July 1915 at Adelaide, South Australia. He was 22 years 9 months old, a railway porter, and single. His next-of-kin was his mother – Louie Webster, Palmerston South, Otago, New Zealand. Lawrence had served with the New Zealand Territorial Forces, leaving to go to South Australia. He married Dunedin-born Mabel Annie Souness on 25 October 1915 at Adelaide, South Australia. And on 28 October 1915, his wife became his next-of-kin - Mabel Webster, Palmerston South, Otago, New Zealand. A draper, Lawrence died on 22 February 1928 at Timaru, aged 35 years, and survived by his widow, Mabel. He was buried in the Services section of the Timaru Cemetery, with an Australian Services memorial stone. Mabel remarried later in 1928, to a returned serviceman, and she died in 1929. Their son, John Colin Webster (Colin), born at Timaru in 1921, lost his life in World War II. A daughter survived. Lawrence’s brother, Ashton Emile Webster was called up in 1917 for service in World War I.
