Biographical Notes

Richard Dunbar Warburton, born about 1890 at Timaru, South Island, New Zealand, enlisted with the Australian Imperial Force on 18 March 1916 in New South Wales. He was 25 years 9 months old, a theatre employee and single. He named his mother as next-of-kin – Helen (Helena) Fergus Warburton, …? Theatre, Brisbane; later care of Mrs M. Fisher, 353 Albert Street, West Brunswick, Victoria; and later again 4 …? Parade, Fitzroy, Victoria. Helena Fergus Warburton was born Helen Fergusson in 1859 in Ednburgh, Scotland. She married Richard D’Orsay Ogden in 1882 in Shanghai, China, while performing there. Both Helen and Richard were stage actors. They had two daughters born in the 1880s in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, the younger daughter dying in infancy. Richard Ogden died in 1912 in Sydney. In 1893 and in1896, Ellen Fergus Warburton was at Mount Eden, Auckland, with the parents of Richard Laurence Warburton. Richard was a stage and film actor whose stage name was Laurence Dunbar. Ellen (Helen) and Richard had two children born in New Zealand – Richard Dunbar Warburton in about 1890 at Timaru and Madeline Warburton born in 1891 at Greymouth. Richard Laurence Warburton married in 1909 in Australia and died there in 1923. Helen Warburton, the mother of Richard junior, died in 1944 in New South Wales. Richard Dunbar Warburton, too, was an actor, whose stage name was Richard Dunbar. He married Vashti Zoie La Bonner, also a theatre artist, in 1921 in Sydney. Richard died on 3 January 1966 at King’s Cross, Sydney, aged 75 years.
