Biographical Notes

Bateman Missen, born at Timaru, enlisted at Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, on 13 February 1915. He had served two months with the New Zealand Territorials before leaving the district. He was 22 years 6 months old, a labourer and single. His nominated next-of-kin was his father – Jack Missen, Taihape, North Island, New Zealand. He returned to Australia from England in 1919 per the “Kashmir”. This is, indeed, Bateman Thomas Missen, the son of John Henry (Jack) and Amy Keedwell (née Cobden) Missen, who was born on 8 August 1895 at Timaru. He had, therefore, put his age up by three years. Bateman was educated at Tarata School, Inglewood. After returning to New Zealand Bateman married Francese Eleanor St Clair, in 1922. Their son, Bateman Kenneth Missen, served in World War II, remaining in England, where he married and died. John Henry Bateman and David Curry Missen, brothers of Bateman Thomas, also served in World War I, with the New Zealand Forces, both putting their ages up. David Curry Missen, an uncle of Bateman, John and David, was killed in action in 1917 at Messines.
