Biographical Notes

Charles Alfred Lewis was born on 15 June 1885 at Timaru, the son of Charles Alfred and Elizabeth (née Todd) Lewis, and baptised on 19 July at St Mary’s Anglican Church, Timaru. His parents may have been residing in the Mackenzie District. He entered Denniston School from Westport in 1892, his 5 year old brother John James Lewis starting at Denniston soon after. Thereafter Charles may have spent time at the Burnham Industrial School. Charles, junior, married Annie Christina Anderson in 1908 at Waterloo, Sydney. Charles was a seaman, 30 years old, when he enlisted with the Australian Imperial Force on 9 August 1915 at Warrick Farm, New South Wales. He nominated his wife as next-of-kin – Mrs Annie Lewis, 66 Pine Street, Sydney, NSW, Australia. Charles Alfred Lewis also saw service in World War II. Charles Alfred Lewis died on 18 July 1957 at Marrickville, New South Wales, aged 72. He was buried (ashes?) the Granville Anglican Columbarium, Granville, Parramatta, New South Wales.
