Biographical Notes

Eugene Gerald Byrne, known as Gerald, was born in 1886 at Timaru, the eldest son of Arthur Maginnis and Catherine (née Langan) Byrne. He was probably educated at Invercargill South School and Invercarghill Marist School. He enlisted with the Australian Imperial Force on 23 March 1915 at Brisbane, Queensland. A labourer, 31 years 6 months old, and single, he named his mother as nexr-of-kin – Mrs K. Byrne, Andersons Bay, Dunedin. Eugene was a stockman at Bonus Downs, Maranoa, Queensland in 1914. E. G. Byrne was one of the soldiers whosephotographs were published in The Queenslander Pictorial in 1915. He died on 18 August 1923 at Wentworth Falls, New South Wales, and was buried at Katoomba Cemetery, Katoomba, New South Wales, where his grave is marked by a services stone. His death may have been as a consequence of his war service – “For the Empire’s Cause”. He is remembered on his parents’ headstone in Andersons Bay Cemetery, Dunedin. His father had died suddenly in 1912, and his mother in 1946.
