James Andresen, who was born at Timaru, New Zealand, was 24 years 2 months old when he enlisted on 14 June 1916 at Newcastle, New South Wales. He was a clerk, and nominated Miss Agnes Bodycomb, Arlie Avenue, Armadale, Melbourne, Victoria, as his next-of-kin. He had been with the Australian Imperial Force for 5 weeks and, was discharged before embarkation, being not fit for active Service, but fit for cook in the Home Service.
