Biographical Notes

William Charles Philip, born on 11 December 1893 at Waimate, was the eldest son of Charles and Elizabeth (née Cordner) Philip. His grandparents, William and Caroline Philp, had settled at Waimate in the late 1870s. William was educated at Bannockburn School in Central Otago. When he was called up in 1916 and enlisted, he was a blacksmith at Lowburn Ferry in Central Otago. He married Dorothy Alma Wilkins Wheeler in 1917. William followed the craft of a blacksmith for his entire working life. His father was a cousin of William Scott, 63220, who also served with the New Zealand Forces and died of wounds in 1918 in France. His cousin, Richard Lyall Craik Philip, also served in World War I; and other cousins - David Alexander Philip, James Abercrombie Philip, and Francis Lennie Philp - were all called up for service in World War I. Two uncles – Thomas Lennie Philip and Andrew Lennie Philip – were listed on the Reserve Rolls, both being married with children.
