Biographical Notes

Richard Lyall Craik Philip, born on 16 March 1897 at Waimate, was the eldest son of Alexander Craik and Elizabeth Blanche (née Lane) Philip. His grandparents, William and Caroline Philp, had settled at Waimate in the late 1870s. Richard was educated at Dannevirke North School and Dannevirke High School. On leaving high school in December 1914, he was destined for an office in London, England. He married Ethel Agnes Davies in 1921. Richard died in a motor car accident at Wadestown, Wellington. He was buried at Timaru, the funeral leaving his father-in-law’s residence in Le Cren Street. His father had died in an accident in 1912, when he fell while working as a builder. His father was a cousin of William Scott, 63220, who also served with the New Zealand Forces and died of wounds in 1918 in France. His cousin, William Charles Philip, also served in World War I; and other cousins - David Alexander Philip, James Abercrombie Philip, and Francis Lennie Philp - were all called up for service in World War I. Two uncles – Thomas Lennie Philip and Andrew Lennie Philip – were listed on the Reserve Rolls, both being married with children.
