Biographical Notes

Henry (known as Harry) was born 15 February 1889 in Pleasant Point, Canterbury. He was the second son of Robert Augustus Anderson and Edyth Alice Abnderson (nee Box). The family migrated to New Zealand on board the Echunga, arriving in Timaru on 24 December 1862. Harry came from a family of eight in all: William (Bill) Robert Anderson (1887-1963); Henry/Harry Leslie Anderson (1889-1975); Gladys Emma Berry Anderson (1892-1975); Ernest Edward Anderson (1895-1977); Robert Anderson (1896-1898); Dorothy Joyce Anderson (1900-1971); Edythe Marjorie Anderson (1902-1978); and Lily Anderson (1905-1972). Ernest was enrolled at Pleasant Point School on 6 February 1905, where he received his education.

He was educated at Pleasant Point School, enrolling there in 1893. After completing schooling his first employment was as a Ploughman in 1911. He married Ethel Maude Charter on 15 May 1912 at Timaru. Henry and Ethel had two children – Leslie Dexter born on 6 April 1913 at Pleasant Point and Bernard born on 21 February 1917 at Dunedin. When he enlisted in 1918, Harry gave his occupation as motor proprietor. He joined the 37th Reinforcements, Mounted Rifles Brigade in mid-1918, toward the end of the war. Trooper H. L. Anderson returned to New Zealand from Egypt per the troopship ‘Ellenga’, embarking at Suez on 23 July 1919, arriving in late August.

Harry died in 1975, at Christchurch, aged 86 years of age.

Harry’s brother Ernest Edward Anderson also served overseas in World War One, while his oldest brother William Robert Anderson enlisted for home service.
