Biographical Notes

Arthur William Clare was the elder son of Henry William and Lillian Margaret (née Fuller) Clare. He was educated at Christchurch Normal, Christchurch Central and Christchurch West schools before leaving for the West Coast at the age of ten. At the time of enlisting, he was living with his parents in Timaru. Arthur married Dolina Gunn in 1922. The Methodist Church of Timaru placed a handsome window in the Bank Street Church as a memorial for the war victims of the congregations. Apart from the names of the fallen appearing on the window, the names of all who served were inscribed in a book which was to be preserved in the Church. Included in the names was that of Arthur Clare.
