Biographical Notes

John Goodall Ellis was the eldest of the six sons of John Holmes and Elizabeth Mary (née Sullivan) Ellis. He was educated at Timaru Main and Timaru South schools, transferring to Otiake and Otekaike in North Otago at the age of 13, and from there to Woolston in Christchurch. John married Hilda Annie Schumacher in 1924. The Methodist Church of Timaru placed a handsome window in the Bank Street Church as a memorial for the war victims of the congregations. Apart from the names of the fallen appearing on the window, the names of all who served were inscribed in a book which was to be preserved in the Church. Included in the names was that of John Ellis.
