Biographical Notes

John Clayton Mason was the son of Charles Henry and Anna Marie Mason. John’s mother was found dead in her bed at Linwood, Christchurch on 26 July 1902. About 1904 Charles moved to Timaru, where he remarried in 1907. John, who was educated at Phillipstown and East Christchurch schools, had been in Timaru for ten years when he enlisted. He was a well-known tennis and hockey player. He married Agnes McLellan Brown in 1928. The Methodist Church of Timaru placed a handsome window in the Bank Street Church as a memorial for the war victims of the congregations. Apart from the names of the fallen appearing on the window, the names of all who served were inscribed in a book which was to be preserved in the Church. Included in the names was that of John Clayton Mason.
