Biographical Notes

Philip Brenton Strongman was the son of Thomas Tom and Mary (née Chapman) Strongman. He was at home with his mother and siblings at St Columb, Cornwall in 1901; his father was away from home conducting services for the Wesleyman Church. Philip had come to New Zealand in about 1908. P. B. Strongman featured in the Timaru Herald in 1913 – letter to the editor, delivering a monologue at the Old Men’s Home, giving an item at the Fairview Methodist Bible Class. In March 1914 he left Timaru for Nelson to take up Home Mission work in connection with the Methodist Church. Just before leaving he performed at the Sunday School concert in the Fairview School. He was welcomed at Nelson in early April. Although he was recorded at Wakefield, Nelson, on the 1919 electoral roll, he took his discharge in England. Philip married Hilda Jane Strongman at Stcolumb, Cornwall, in 1926. The Methodist Church of Timaru placed a handsome window in the Bank Street Church as a memorial for the war victims of the congregations. Apart from the names of the fallen appearing on the window, the names of all who served were inscribed in a book which was to be preserved in the Church. Included in the names was that of Philip Betten [sic] Strongman.
