Biographical Notes

Stanley Targuse was the fourth son of Alfred and Susan (née Cant) Targuse. He was educated at Timaru Main School. Mr Targuse died in June 1899. It was some years later that many of the family left the district. Stanley was successful in the Timaru Technical School examinations in October 1907 – second class pass in senior English and shorthand theory and a shorthand speed certificate for 50 words per minute. In 1908 he gained a first class pass in senior commercial arithmetic and in senior shorthand theory. He also competed in swimming and played football. By 1913 Stanley was on the Reading staff of the “New Zealand Herald”. A shop assistant, Stanley was called up in 1917. His oldest brother, Alfred George Targuse who had remained in Timaru, was drawn in the ballot in August 1918. Stanley married Lily Elizabeth Burd in 1919. His brother, John David Targuse, enlisted, but . . . The Methodist Church of Timaru placed a handsome window in the Bank Street Church as a memorial for the war victims of the congregations. Apart from the names of the fallen appearing on the window, the names of all who served were inscribed in a book which was to be preserved in the Church. Included in the names was that of Stanley Targuse.
