Biographical Notes

William James Tonkin was the elder son of William and Annie (née Clemens) Tonkin. He was educated at Washdyke School and maybe Waimataitai. In 1922 he married Lois Cody who died in 1933 and was buried at Timaru. William married secondly, Agnes Irene Gudsell, who died in 1992 and was cremated at Salisbury Park. The Methodist Church of Timaru placed a handsome window in the Bank Street Church as a memorial for the war victims of the congregations. Apart from the names of the fallen appearing on the window, the names of all who served were inscribed in a book which was to be preserved in the Church. Included in the names was that of William James Tonkin
