Biographical Notes

Frederick Shaw was the son of Charles Reginald Shaw, and his second wife, Sarah, née Maude. The first wife of Charles died in 1882 at Timaru, leaving a large family. Charles married Sarah in 1888, having a large family by her also. Fred was educated at Union Street School, Dunedin, transferring to Timaru South School in 1897 and leaving there in December 1899 to assist his surveyor father. He earned recognition at Union Street School in 1896 and was Dux of Timaru south in 1899. Private F. Shaw returned home with Draft 191 of invalided soldiers by the “Remuera”, embarking at Liverpool on 7 September 1918 and arriving on 23 October. He suffered 50% disability as a result of tB of the lung. Fred remained in Timaru after the war, living with his mother probably until her death.
