Biographical Notes

Frederick James Chapman, known as Fred was the son of James and Ann (Annie, née Phillips) Chapman. Fred's father James had come to New Zealand in his teens, with his parents, the family residing at Temuka. James Chapman had a keen interest in Volunteering and musical matters. In Christchurch, where he had lived since about 1875, he was an enthusiastic soldier, bandsman and bandmaster of the Salvation Army band. In 1901 he joined the Elite Band, of which his son and pupil, Mr Fred Chapman, was a member. Fred was educated at Phillipstown and Christchurch East schools. James Chapman died in 1905. Fred lived with his mother in Tuam Street for many years, Annie dying there in 1934. Later in life Frederick married Marion Violet who survived him for nearly 11 years.
