Biographical Notes

Stanley Middleton Satterthwaite was the oldest son of Thomas William and Marie Gertrude Grace (née Knight) Satterthwaite. His father was for some years mayor of Timaru. Stanley was educated at Timaru Main School and Timaru Boys' High School. While in camp at Trentham in 1916, he gained his commission. He was severely wounded at Baupaume and invalided back to New Zealand. After the war he joined the regular forces. Stanley married Alice Maud Walker in 1922. He also saw service overseas in World War II, when he was mentioned in despatches in 1942. His youngest brother, Norman Timaru Satterthwaite, was killed in action on 15 December 1943 in Italy. Another brother, Jack Seddon Satterthwaite, served with the RNZAF in world War II. Lieutenant-colonel S. M. Satterthwaite retired from the permanent staff on 31 March 1948, having attained the age limit.
