Biographical Notes

William Elliott McQuarters, known as Bill, was the second son of William Henry McQuarters and his wife, Edith née Elliott. He was educated at Waitoa, Opotiki, Waikanae and Kaitoki schoolsi. Bill farmed with his father and brother Joseph at Darling Downs, Cave. He was a farmer there when, late in 1917, he was selected by lot from the First Division and called up. His brother Joseph of Darling Downs, was his nominated next-of-kin. William (junior) married Ethel Alice Jessop in 1928. William's brother, Joseph Elliott McQuarters, also served in World WarI, and their father enlisted on 5 August 1918. William may be buried in the Ashburton Cemetery where his wife was laid to rest in 1987. Both William and Joseph signed up again for World War II.
