Biographical Notes

Joseph Elliott McQuarters was the oldest son of William Henry McQuarters and his wife, Edith née Elliott. He was educated at West Christchurch and Belfast schools in the Canterbury district, before going to Waikanae School and Kaitoki School, Wanganui. Joseph farmed with his father and brother William at Darling Downs, Cave. He was there when he was named as next-of-kin for his brother Bill. Joseph was of Cave when he married Ida Ruth Andrews In April 1920 at the Presbyterian Church, Te Puke, Joseph and Ida settled in the South Island and had two sons. Joseph's brother, William Elliott McQuarters, also served in World WarI, and their father enlisted on 5 August 1918. Both Joseph and William signed up again for World War II.
