Biographical Notes

John McBride was the son of Samuel McBride and his first wife, Hannah née Banks. Hannah died in 1892. Samuel, who married again, died in 1916. John was educated at Timaru South School. He married Edith Mary Ann Townsend on 29 December 1903 at Wellington. Late in 1917 he was drawn in the Second Ballot for Second Division Class A drafts. His half-brother, Andrew, was killed in action in 1918 in France; another half-brother, Robert, also served in the war, and a brother, William, was called up.
