Biographical Notes

James Cochrane was the second son of James Paterson and Mary Sophia (née Pollard) Cochrane. His father drowned accidentally in the Waiao River in July 1904. Two of his brothers, John and David, also served in World War I. Two cousins lost their lives in the war - John Alexander Cochrane at Gallipoli in 1915 and Charles Tennant at sea in 1918, and two other cousins served - John (Jack) Tennant and James Wallace Tennant.
