Biographical Notes

Andrew Clarkson was the son of Joseph and Elizabeth (née Murphy) Clarkson. He attested on 14 May 1915 as Henry Murphy. Several details at enlistment were false (name, birth date, birth place; next-of-kin's name). A declaration of 18 October 1918 proved that is name was Andrew Clarkson. as of 1918, he stated that he had previously been rejected as unfit for military service on account of bad teeth. In October 1918 Henry Murphy, son of Mrs E. Clarkson, Timaru, had been reported wounded. From 1912, his name appeared in the police gazettes - theft, drunkenness, rogue and vagabond. In 1914 and 1919 Andrew Clarkson was recorded at home in Timaru with his mother and some siblings. William Clarkson, 32306, was very likely a brother of Andrew. Andrew Clarkson enlisted for World War II with the Australian Military Forces at Brisbane.
