Biographical Notes

Herbert Lewis Struthers was the youngest son of Henry and Rosa Harriet (née Rapsey) Struthers. Herbert was educated at Fairlie and Hazelburn schools. He was a ploughman at Pahiatua when he was called up. Herbert had married Lizzie Nairn Grey on 8 June 1916 at Masterton. Embarking at Tilbury on 12 March 1919 for the return home, he reached Lyttelton, New Zealand by the “Corinthic” in April 1919, one of 1142 soldiers aboard. His older brother James Brackenridge Struthers enlisted for World War I..Alexander Francis Struthers, who was called up in 1918, was probably his brother.
