Biographical Notes

Henry James Alley was the elder son of Henry John and Alice (née Preece) Alley. It appears that his parents moved about quite a lot. Henry was educated at Oreti Plains, Winton and Clinton schools. He was farming with his father at Gapes Valley when he enlisted. Embarking at Tilbury on 12 March 1919 for the return home, he reached Lyttelton, New Zealand by the “Corinthic” in April 1919, one of 1142 soldiers aboard. Henry married Rose Ineson in 1923 at Geraldine.
