Biographical Notes

John Duthie Joe, known as Jack, was the third son of James and Mary (née Serpless or Surplus) Joe. a shepherd at Lake Tekapo, he was drawn in the first military service ballot for No. 10 (South Canterbury) recruiting district in November 1916. Jack married Hannah Emma Childs in 1923. His brother, David Joe, was called up in 1918. .
