Biographical Notes

William Lewis Howard was the son of William Woodnut and Katherine (née Emery) Howard. He had been in New Zealand for 8 years when he attested. He was drawn in the first military service ballot for No. 10 (South Canterbury) recruiting district in November 1916. William married Hilda Marion Nicholls on 9 April 1917 at St Andrews. Their son, Norman Lewis Augustus Howard was born at Whare Nana, Timaru, on 30 August 1918, almost seven months after william had left.
