Biographical Notes

John Mechen was the older son of John and Isabella (née Thompson) Mechen. His mother died in June 1897 at Kaitangata, at the birth of her fifth child. John attended Fairview School near Timaru, under the guardianship of his grandfather. He was called up in 1917 while at Pareora. He had served with the 8th South Canterbury Mounted Rifles. John married Johanna Brosnahan in 1932, and they had a son and a daughter.
