Biographical Notes

Cecil Lancelot Hoskin, second son of S. Archelaus and Ellen Hoskin, was born at 'Benalta Villa' Otaio, 1895. Cecil was educated at the St Andrews and Otiao Schools. On leaving school he helped on the family farm, milking cows for a time. He was then employed as a shepherd at Erewhon Station and also on H.B.S Johnston's, Otaio. He took over the local mail run from his father, continuing with the horse and cart delivery, up the Esk Valley three days a week. His hobbies included rifle shooting and cycling racing. He took part in Sports Day in the St Andrew's Domain.

Cecil’s name was drawn in the seventh conscription ballot in 1917, joining the Mounted Rifles. A family history records he travelled with his own horse Fakir. Sadly, at the end of the war the Mounted Rifles’ horses were shot, rather than being shipped home, so the men came home without their mounts.

On his return from the war Cecil married Dora Campbell and had three children: Dorothy Mavis Hoskin, Phyllis Margaret Hoskin, and Colin Reginald Hoskin. He took over Bentalta Villa from his father. With changing times the farmlet proved too small for progress, so he secured a position at Canterbury Frozen Meat works at Pareora, remaining there for 26 years. He shifted to Pareora and then Timaru in his later years. After retiring he helped his son at Hook farm.

Cecil died in Timaru Hospital on 11 June 1961, and is buried at Timaru Cemetery.
