Biographical Notes

Charles Ewart Laurence Thompson was the fifth son of Henry James Thompson and his fist wife, Mary Jane née Whyte. His mother died in 1906. He was educated at the Belfast School and the Marist School in Barbadoes Street, Christchurch. He was serving with the 2nd South Canterbury Regiment, with which he went to camp. Ewart married Tydvyl Maud Rutter on 1 November 1918 at Amesbury, Wiltshire, England. In 1919 he was a labourer for the Canterbury Transport Board.
