Biographical Notes

William John Mitchell was born on 25 August 1893 at Dunedin, the second and older surviving son of William Dunn and Maria (née Jeffrey) Mitchell, their first-born having died in infancy. A single man, employed as a carpenter for the Education Board at Timaru, he enlisted early in the war. He returned home after four years and 133 days of serviceoverseas, and with a wife. William married Beatrice May Hooper on 28 September 1918 at the IParish Church at Ilfracombe, Devon, England. His younger brother, Smith Bryce Mitchell, also served in World War I. Bryce married Eleanor McCartney in 1925.
