Alexander Robert Thomson was the elder son of Peter and Emily (née Bradley) Thomson. Alexander attended Waikiwi School in Southland. He returned to New Zealand on the Maunganui in June 1919..In 1920 at Chalmers Church, Timaru, he married Amelia Harvie Stark. His brother George Ward Thomson also served in World War I
