James Robert Melton was the son of James and Barbara Wallace Murdoch Melton (nee Kennard) of Morven.

James Robert Melton's was the nephew of Thomas Kennard (23194), brother in law of Lionel Arthur Marshall (46653), and cousin of both Donald McNicol Kennard (55278) and Herbert Hinman Jackson (38961) who also served during the war.
