Biographical Notes

Herbert Reginald Walker, known as Bert, was the eldest son of Frederick (Fred) and Agnes (née Reilly) Walker. Bert was educated at several schools - Waimataitai, Temuka, Ashburton, Seadown, and then back to Waimataitai. It appears that he was with the British Navy in 1911 when he is listed in the census as a Signal Boy, 17 years old and single. He enlisted with the Australian Naval Force on 5 December 1912, and embarked on "Pioneer". A letter to his mother in 1915 details some of his experiences in the Persian Gulf. [See attachment] On 24 August 1920 at St Mary's Church, Timaru, he married Ethel May Tait (widow, née Stevenson).
