Biographical Notes

George Prattley, the son of Eli and Jane Prattley (nee Malins). was born on 24 August 1888 in Temuka. George had six brothers and sisters, Henry John, Arthur, Ruth May, James, and Richard Luke (Dick) Prattley. He also had five half-brothers and sisters: Walter Eli, William, George Henry, Leonard and Elijah Prattley.

Before the war George was a Dairy farmer in Winchester. When George attended the Travelling Medical Board, which he passed Class A, and signed his attestation papers in Timaru, on 15th September 1917, he was just over 29 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighed 174lb, with a chest measurement of between 32 1/2 and 36 1/2 inches. The medical officer described him as having a fresh complexion with blue eyes and brown hair. George gave his religion as "Church of England".

George left Winchester on 20 May 1918 and entered camp at Trentham the next day. George' father Eli had died in 1904, so his mother Jane was listed as next of kin. Jane lived at Milford, Temuka. On 14th June 1918, Private Prattley 80105 of B Company of the 41st Reinforcements was sent on leave. He never left New Zealand as the war came to an end.

George married Lucy Mary Ann Ineson. George died on 11 March 1970 and is buried in the Temuka Cemetery.
