Biographical Notes

Patrick Kane was born in Timaru on 31 December 1887 to Anthony and Mary Kane (nee Keane) of Craigie Avenue. He was the couple's fifth son (of six children).

Patrick was a civil servant upon his enlistment, employed at the railway station in Waikar. He was aged 27, a Roman Catholic and single. He was enrolled as a rifleman in the 1st NZ Rifle Brigade, B Company. He embarked at Wellington on 9 October 1915 bound for Suez and Egypt. He served in Egypt and on the Western Front, being wounded in action in France on 15 September 1916. Subsequently he was discharged on 12 October 1917 as no longer medically fit due to wounds received. For his service he was awarded 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal, and the Victory Medal.

Following the war Patrick married Ivy Mary Murfitt, second daughter of Mr and the late Mrs Henry Murfitt of Rangiora at St Mary’s RC Church, Rangiora on 27 October 1920. His brother, Rev Father Kane SM assisted with the ceremony. Patrick enlisted for the Home Guard during the Second World War in July 1940 when he was 52. At that time he was a railway worker living at 23 James St. He died on 3 December 1950 at Greymouth aged 61 and is buried in Timaru Cemetery with his wife Mary.
