Biographical Notes

Herbert was born on 29 June 1891 t0 John Joseph Ellis )1856-1933) and Nellie Ellis (nee Donovan, 1859-1922). He was the seventh child of ten, including eight boys and two girls.

Herbert arrived Egypt in January 1915. He was sent to England in March 1916 and returned to Egypt in December 1916. He was eventually discharged on account of illness in March 1919.

Herbert married Catherine Elizabeth Gow in 1925.
