Biographical Notes

John Havelock Davidson was born on 13 February 1889 at Timaru, the youngest son of John and Christina (née Wilson) Davidson. Along with his siblings he was educated at Gleniti (known as Wai-iti) School, and transferred to Waimataitai School in 1899, leaving there at the age of 15. When he enlisted on 25 August 1915, he was single. On 28 September 1915 he married Rosina Ellen Bloomfield at Chalmers Church, Timaru. Mrs R. E. Davidson was his next-of-kin when he embarked. Lance-Corporal J. H. Davidson, 7/16006, of Timaru, returned to New Zealand aboard the “Chupra”, one of 732 soldiers due at Lyttelton about July 22nd, 1919. After John and Rosina were divorced in 1924, John married Minnie Macmillan. He died on 2 December 1958 at Devonport, aged 69. He was cremated at Purewa and his ashes were interred in Purewa Cemetery.
