Military Cross (MC) – Captain, 2nd Battalion, Canterbury Regiment, Staff Captain 3rd NZ Rifle Brigade. “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When staff captain of his brigade he personally visited each battalion commander to find out if supplies of materials and water were reaching their destination. He performed this action under extremely heavy shell fire, during which he visited each platoon with the same object. His coolness and cheerfulness under fire greatly inspired all with whom he came in contact.” – London Gazette, 16 August 1917, p8395. Mentioned in Despatches (MiD) – Captain, 2nd Battalion, Canterbury Regiment. “British Front Amentieres 7th May to 7th August 1916, and operations on the Somme, 12th September to 2nd October 1916. During the above periods this officer has rendered most meritorious service, both in command of a company, and as Staff Captain to his Brigade. During the recent operations on the Somme he carried out several reconnaissances under heavy shell fire with very satisfactory results.” – London Gazette, 4 January 1917, 0261, Rec No 374.

Biographical Notes

Captain George Carlisle's outstanding serice was recognised by two awards. The first, a Military Cross (MC), was awarded to him in his role as Staff Captain of the 2nd Battalion of the Canterbruy Regiment, 3rd NZ Rifle Brigade. The citation read: “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When staff captain of his brigade he personally visited each battalion commander to find out if supplies of materials and water were reaching their destination. He performed this action under extremely heavy shell fire, during which he visited each platoon with the same object. His coolness and cheerfulness under fire greatly inspired all with whom he came in contact.” (London Gazette, 16 August 1917). He was also awarded a Mention in Despatches (MiD), which was published in January. That citation read: “British Front Amentieres 7th May to 7th August 1916, and operations on the Somme, 12th September to 2nd October 1916.
