Biographical Notes

Charles Eric Andrews married Christina Cameron Mackenzie on 29 March 1900 at Wellington, New Zealand. Charles Eric Andrews was one of a number of officers appointed to the New Zealand Staff Corps with the rank of Lieutenant, effective from 17 March 1911. Charles and Christina were living in Campbell Street, Timaru at this time, and moved to Preston Street prior to the war. Captain Andrews was in Egypt in January 1915, when his wife arrived in England to offer her services as a nurse in France. As from 18 December 1915, Captain C. E. Andrews was to be temporary major while in command of a company. In June 1916 Major C. E. Andrews, New Zealand staff corps, spent a few weeks' leave in London with his wife who was nursing at the 4th London General Hospital. He then returned to France to rejoin his battalion. Major Charles Eric Andrews was invalided in September 1916 and returned home. Major Andrews, assistant-adjutant-general, was temporarily authorised to exercise the power of adjutant-general in the absence of Colonel Tate in February 1919. It was in June 1919 that the appointment of Major Charles Eric Andrews, NZSC, as an officer of the Order of the British Empire was gazetted.
