Biographical Notes

Sarah, known as Hilda, was the daughter of Bryan and Sarah (née Lynskey) Flynn and never married herself. She trained as a nurse at Hawera Hospital, and then at Waipukurau. Considered very musical (in singing and piano) she had attended Sacred Heart Convent in Timaru.

Hilda served in Egypt, assisting with evacuations from Gallipoli. Later she served on the Dunluce Castle from July 1917 to January 1918, then on the Karama from April 1918 to May 1918. Finally she returned to New Zealand on the Marama in 1918. Hilda was noted to have sent a letter to the mother of soldier James Adam Beattie in December 1917, who had died on board the Dunluce Castle. Hilda's father died before she returned to home.
