Biographical Notes

Son of Bryan and Sarah Flynn nee Lynskey. Bryan (senior) emmigrated to New Zealand in January 1863 on the "Chariot of Fame" and ran hotels, incluing Ashley Hotel, Rangiora, Queens, Christchurch, Criterion, and Waimate. He purchased land at Willowbridge in 1906 but sold up and moved back to Christchurch. Bryan (junior) married Mary Teresa (Minnie Mary) Coughlan on 28 April 1914 who died only a year later on 19 June 1915 in childbirth, and was buried at Temuka Cemetery. Bryan (junior) enlisted under his own name, but was rejected as medically unfit (possibly epliletic with alcoholic tendecies) after serving only 16 days. He then re-enlisted ten days later in Wellington under the name Bernard and was passed as fit.

After the war Bryan returned to New Zealand and married Frances May Joli in 1921.
