Biographical Notes

Born William Livingstone Hatchwell Sinclair, William took his step-father's name "Burgess" after his mother remarried and, then in 1921 on his marriage changed to "Sincalir-Burgess". William served with the Mounted Rifles in Timaru at the turn of the century, but soon after moved to Auckland and there joined the New Zealand Regiment of Field Artillery Volunteers. He went on to be seconded to the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) which he joined at the outbreak of war. He returned to New ZEaland after the war where he continued serving with the New Zealand Army, ultimately becoming General Officer Commanding and Chief of General Staff, New Zealand Military Forces. See the biography by Mark Cameron attached to this record for a more detailed account of Sinclair-Burgess' career.
