Biographical Notes

John Thomas TWOMEY, known as Thomas, was the son of Irish parents, Timothy and Nora Annie (Annie, nee DILLON) TWOMEY. His brother Jeremiah also served in WWI. Thomas was among the first to respond to the call, leaving on 15 August 1914 with the Samoan Advance Party. He served in amoa for three months in 1914. Thomas gave a total of 3 years and 159 days of service, all but about 5 months overseas. He returned to New Zealand by the "Kia Ora" in June 1919. he did have a few indiscretions - in June 1915 he overstayed his leave, for which he lost three days pay and was confined to barracks for two days; . . . . [cont.]; and in April 1917 he was deprived of two days pay for parading with a dirty rifel and for parading unshaven.
