Biographical Notes

Daniel Jeremiah Keane was born at Waimate on 12 November 1889. He was the son of Daniel Keane and his second wife Johanna (nee Carrol) of Manse St, Waimate, previously from Kerry, Ireland. Daniel was baptised on 17 November 1889 at St Patrick's Catholic Church, Waimate.

Daniel was a railway clerk, residing in King St, Waimate when he joined up on 25 August 1915. He was described as 5ft 7in tall, of dark complexion with blue eyes and dark brown hair, Roman Catholic, and single. He was attested as a gunner in the NZ Field Artillery, embarking at Wellington on 13 November 1915, bound for Egypt. He served both in Egypt and on the Western Front, attaining he rank of sergeant. Daniel Keane was discharged on 22 June 1919 having served 3 years and 302 days. He was awarded the British War Medal, Victory Medal and 1914/15 Star.

At the ned of the war, tragedy struck Daniel's family - his oldest brother died in 1918 during the influenza epidemic. A few years later a happier momnet came when Daniel married Isabel Mary Eriksen in 1921. Later the 1928 electoral roll shows him living in Wellington at 3 Arthur St, his occupation listed as clerk. Daniel joined up again during the Second World War, on 7 November 1940, at that time living at 6 Carrington St, Wellington, a clerk for the Labourer’s Union. His next of kin that time was his wife Isabel Mary Keane and he stated he had one dependant child. He was 51 years old.

Daniel Keane died 19 March 1953 and is buried at Karori Cemetery, Wellington.
