Biographical Notes

Robert Scott McMillan was born on 20 August 1896 at Timaru, the son of William and Catherine Helen (née Hutchison) McMillan. He was educated at Southburn School, the family having moved to Southburn from the Pareora Estate in April 1900. He was a ploughman at Southburn when his name was drawn in the Military Service Ballot late in 1916. He enlisted as "MacMillan", the spelling by which he was called up as. Robert MacMillan embarked on 15 August 1917 with the Canterbury Infantry Regiment of the 29th Reinforcements, per the “Ruahine”, destined for Glasgow, Scotland. He died on 12 August 1966 at Timaru, just eight days before his 70th birthday, and was buried at Timaru. His wife, Barbara Pearl (née McGowan), died seven months later. His older brother, Archibald Hutchison McMillan, also served in World War One.
