Biographical Notes

Jack Thomson FITZGERALD. Jack was the son of Richard (born in Scotland) and Jean (born in Ireland) FITZGERALD, both of whom were deceased by 1917. Jack (John Thompson Fitzgerald) was drawn in the second Military Service Ballot for the South Canterbury district in December 1916. On enlistment on 1 February 1917 at Timaru, he stated that he had been living in New Zealand for 22 years. A Medical Board was a ssembled at Trentham on 6 May 1917. In the Proceedins the Board wrote "This man states he was born in 1869 - is consequently 48 years old & over age." Consequent disabilities - "Unable to train(?)." How long is disability likely to be continued? - "Permanent." The Board recommended Discharge, stating "This man looks quite 48 years of age though as he was born in London he cannot produce evidence of same." Elsewhere Jack says that he was born in 1874. Yet at his medical examination he had been assessed as Fit Class A. On discharge he was noted as being of good character.
