Biographical Notes

Charles GROVES, born on 19 August 1892, was the son of Charles and Janet (née ANNAN) GROVES. He was baptised on 6 November 1892 at the Geraldine Presbyterian Church. From the Territorials, he enrolled and passed the examination on 12 August 1914, in a very lively and busy Drill Shed; he was not one of those rejected because they were over age or under age, insufficiently developed, had no experience, or were over weight (the regulation weight was 12 stone). Brother Richard also served in WWI. One of the first to enlist and leave for the Front. He was in the Second South Canterbury Company under commanding officer Captain D. Grant. Charles was a member of the Star Football Club. At the club's annual meeting in April 1915 his name was among those forwarded to the South Canterbury Rugby Union for the compilation of a New Zealand Roll of Honour. Mrs Groves, the mother of Charles and Richard, did her part for the war effort - in July 1915 she gave money for wool to make Ambulance Comforts, and in September she donated to the fund for leather waistcoats. Charles, wounded, embarked for England on the hospital ship Ascania in September 1915. Shortly after he was admitted to the First Southern General Hospital, Birmingham.
